On February 18th, 2025 Microsoft announced the public preview of the data exploration agent for Model driven apps. This new agent provides the ability to find records using complex filters using Copilot and Natural language to describe what data you are looking for.
The data grid control, now referred to as Smart grid (in preview) allows users to find, filter and short the data quickly using Natural Language and to bypass complex advanced filters.
To turn on this feature, and admin will need to turn it on in the Settings -> Features area of your environment as shown in the screenshot below.
Once the feature has been enabled, your Command Bar will change by adding the view selector to the Command Bar and modifying the location of the command bar items, Edit columns, Edit filters and Share buttons. Beneath the Command Bar you will now see the Natural Language view search bar where you can type in your query in Natural Language as well as see results in a chart view using the Visualize button.
An easy example after importing sample data, is if I want to search all contacts that have the word “sample” in their last name, thus not showing any of the real contacts in the database. The Natural Language query would be: All contacts with sample in their name (shown below)
You can take this even further by clicking on the Visualize button and displaying a chart from this data, and then filtering the data from within the chart.
While this feature is still in preview, it is expected to be GA in April of this year. To learn more about this feature as part of the 2024 Release Wave 2 Plan, click on the following link.
